When an event planner...
packs for a trip
Dress properly
-
You don't want anything tight, this increases your risk of blood clots, and is just plain uncomfortable. So leggings or yoga pants.
-
Have options- layering is key. I wear leggings, a t shirt, a cardigan and a large scarf that can double as a blanket or even be rolled as a pillow.
-
TSA friendly shoes- I personally wear easy slip on ballet flats. Then throw on socks once I've boarded.
Pack a comfort bag
A comfort bag is a personal bag you have constantly at the ready, so under your feet, not in the over head bin. This is usually a tote, or in your purse. Do not place these items in your main carry on, as explained here.
-
-
Socks- for tsa reasons I always wear flip flops or ballet flats. But on flights my feet get cold. So a pair of scarves.
-
Moisturizer- dry dry air. Enough said. (obviously follow TSA laws)
-
chap stick
-
super basic makeup- this is especially true for over night flights or early morning flights. Recently I had a flight to Florida at 6 am, I had to leave my house by 3:45 am, so no, I was not taking the time for make up. Once I got on the plane and settled I applied very basic makeup
-
BB cream or tinted moisturizer
-
a liquid or gel blush- lipstick works in a pinch- a cream based, not glossy
-
mascara
-
eye brow pencil
-
remember, planes moves, so nothing too complicated like eye liner or a darker lipstick that needs a more precision applicator
-
-
A face towel. Close to landing, refresh face wiht towel. apply moisturizer, apply make up. You’ll land super refreshed!
-
-
A scarf or pashmina that can double as a wrap, again, planes get cold. You can also roll it up for a pillow
-
on that note, if you want to try and sleep, a travel pillow.
-
Ibuprofen- I get headaches flying, so I like to have something just in case. Nothing worse than feeling a headache coming on and being trapped with nothing to do about it
-
moisturizing nose spray
-
baby wipes or moist towlettes
-
snacks
-
an empty water bottle- you can fill it up at a fountain after passing through TSA
-
headphones
-
a book or other entertainment
-
Do what you would do at your destination
To make the transition easier, behave as you would at your destination. If it's 7 pm at your destination, then it's dinner time. This may take some pre-planning meal wise, but it'll help you adjust more quickly. If it's 11pm at your destination, do your best to get some sleep. More on that next.
Sleep
-
Try and sleep even if you just get in a nap, you'll wake up with more energy, and boy does it make time fly!
-
A little help from a pill, should you? If you have AT LEAST 6 solid hours, you can use a sleeping pill. Less than 6 hours, or even better, 8. You're going to do more harm than good. I've personally had great results with Melatoninand it gives me less side effects, especially if I don't get the full amount.
-
Create a cozy environment- I need both an eye mask and ear plugs
-
A GREAT sleep pillow. This one is my husband's favorite. This one is mine. I'm more of a cuddly sleeper (name that show! :))
Entertainment
Bring lots of entertainment. I never rely on the planes entertainment system. All you have to do is sit at a seat once where the TV isn't working and you will never rely on the plane again either. BOR-RING!
-
If you have Kindle Unlimited (awesome!!) I download a bunch of books, including the free audio, so I can read or listen, which helps switch things up a bit.
-
Make sure you download a few, just in case one doesn't "capture" you right away, you don't want to feel stuck. Also, download at least long enough to cover waiting times, delays and the flight. If you have kindle unlimited, there's no obligation to any one book, so this is easy to do!
-
-
Magazines
-
Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime if you know your flight has wifi, but again, I wouldn't rely on this soley. Also beware, many flights advertise wifi, but they do not advertise there is a fee associated. So prepare to pay the fee, or plan other entertainment. I'm cheap, so I refuse to pay the fee :)
-
Music, but that gets boring after a while, at least for me!
