When an event planner...
decorates a home
Select a theme
I tell my brides this, but it really is great advice for homes to. When I decoarted our guest room, I went with a beach theme. That way when I saw the shell clock, I knew it would go perfect! When I saw the graphic print lamp shade, no matter how much I loved it, I knew it just wouldn't work.
Create a color palette
-
You can have different colors in each room, but stick with the same neutral colors. So Ivory, cream and tan throughout with different pops of colors in each room. Or blues, whites and grays throughout with pops of colors.
-
Understand the color wheel and how colors work together- you can see my post on picking wedding colors here, the same principals apply!
Organize a plan
Whether you use Pinterest, or catalogs, or magazines. Come up with a plan. Draw out a floor plan. Put together a design story board that shows the colors, textures and ideas you've come up with. That way when you're shopping or crafting, you have a clear cut direction. Decorating is all about making decisions
Edit
Ha! Something I will admit I'm bad at! My husband accuses me of being an over decorator, mostly because I just love everything and think everything is so cute and I have to have it! Now!
Add some whimsy
Now I know in this article I have preached organiztion, themes and plans, but that doesn't mean when you see the gold pineapple statue or the red throw, it won't be a great addition to your decor.
